About

The Nautical Commute is an ongoing photo series centered around the Staten Island Ferry.

The project began when I started working full time as a photo editor, spending all day inside the newsroom without an opportunity to be photographing daily assignments. To keep creating photos I turned to one of my earliest inspirations, the ferry.

People come from all over the world to ride what the locals call "The Boat," with tens of thousands making the trip each day. For some, the 5.2 mile, 25 minute trip is a monotonous part of the daily routine. For me each ride is an opportunity to explore the beauty of the harbor, watch the ever-changing skyline and engage with fellow passengers.

Selections from the series were recognized by the New York Press Photographers Association and have been exhibited at the Alice Austen House and National Lighthouse Museum.
